Franchise Rugby League Draft System

Franchise Rugby League is an exciting new addition to the world of rugby league, set to start in 2023. This innovative league features four teams, each consisting of a men’s and women’s team: Valencia Huracanes, Alicante Cruzados, Bath Gladiators, and Bristol Sonics. For the first time in rugby league, a draft system is being introduced into the league to add an extra layer of excitement to both the men’s and women’s competitions.

How it Works: Players

Any rugby league player is free to apply for the draft. Details will be announced for Draft tryouts, where players who have applied will be invited to attend and have the opportunity to qualify to enter the main draft draw. Once a player is entered into the draw, they will have a number assigned to them, with 8 players (4 in the women’s competition, 4 in the men’s) being assigned “Star of the Future” status.

How it Works: Teams

Each team will have an allocated budget for the 2023 season and can use any remaining budget for selecting draft picks. Places are unlimited, so any player can be selected, and the draft system will work across both the men’s and women’s competitions to create parity across the competitions.
Additionally, each team will select a “Star of the Future” from a special draft selection. Each team will be able to select one player for each of their men’s and women’s teams.
Each team will be able to select players using only their remaining budget left for the 2023 season, with unlimited picks available. If two clubs select the same player, each club has the ability to outbid their opponent to secure that player for their squad.
The introduction of the draft system to Franchise Rugby League adds an exciting new element to the sport. With the opportunity to select young talent and build a strong team, each franchise has an equal chance of success. The draft system will create parity across both the men’s and women’s competitions, ensuring that all teams have an equal chance of winning.
